My years as a 4-H member and leader were truly some of the most influential in my life. Over the past few years I have met so many others who also credit their skills as leaders to their 4-H experience. They also state how fortunate they were to benefit from the support and guidance of so many individuals and sponsors. I too thank all those who were part of my 4-H life.
I used to be a really shy person. 4-H gave me the opportunity I needed to get to know other people in a secure environment. My self confidence has grown along with the friends I've made. I could hardly be classified as shy anymore! I'm so glad that 4-H has been a part of my life!
I Started 4-H 3 years ago and now I can't bear the thought of not being in 4-H, it is a blast. This year I went to Members Conference it was so much FUN! I met many new people and I am so happy I went! I always tell my friends to Join I know they will be so happy they did! Cuz 4-H ROCKS!
I have been through the 4-H program and have nothing but good to say about it. I learned so many skills that have come to benefit me in my adult life as well as made so many friends that I still have contact with today. It is a great program for all ages and anyone who gets involved will never regret it. I attended all the leadership experiences and my favourite two would have to be National Conference and Future Leaders in Action. I made so many friends at both of those and I will never forget any of them. I am now a leader myself and love it. I get to meet new kids and teach them skills I gained through 4-H! I would like to thank all the volunteers who spend countless hours and money making 4-H the experience it was for me. I hope I can do the same for the future generations.
I remember attending 4-H awards nights in the early 1970's with my boyfriend (now husband) and watching the members go on stage to receive plates, plaques etc. but not understanding what the fuss was about. Then, when our oldest began 4-H in 1992 I was drawn in as a volunteer because I believe parents should take an active part in their childrens' lives plus give back to the community. Little did I realize that 4-H would have such a huge impact on my life. I am now confident as a speaker, traveler, and decision maker. I owe all these to 4-H and the volunteer opportunities it allowed me to participate in. I now fully understand the awards night I attended in 1972. Thanks 4-H from a grateful volunteer.
4-H was the cornerstone of my learning both facilitation and leadership skills. I was in 4-H until I was 18 and each year I gave a demonstration at the local fairs. From oatmeal cookies to golden loaves of bread I practiced with a team mate doing the cooking and speaking at the same time. It was this effort that honed my public speaking skills and this shy girl found that she enjoyed being in front of a group. I also participated in the junior leadership program and discovered I had an ability to work with young people. I was someone the leaders trusted. The leadership program also offered me the opportunity to travel and meet other young people like myself.
Hi my name is Jaci Shaw and I'm part of 4-H. I first got into 4-H 5 years ago because of my Dad, he was the leader. I had so much fun the first year and met so many new friends that I just stuck with it. You have so many opportunities when you are in 4-H. Like, just this past August I attended the 4-H Members Conference in Acton Ontario. I had an amazing time! I met so many new friends that I still talk to! I would encourage anyone who is 13 or 14 years old to attended this. It was so rewarding. Plus, it will look great on a resume!!
I just wanted to let all the senior 4-H members know about a great opportunity that myself and 3 other Ontario delegates were able to take advantage of. The opportunity is called the National 4-H Member's conference and it was held from Oct 31- Nov 4 in Toronto! I met fellow 4-H members from all over Canada and even a few ambassadors from the United States. There were 57 delegates and 11 chaperones who came with us to Toronto! Lucy Duke was the chaperone from Ontario, and if you ask her I'm sure she'll tell you what a fabulous time she had. We were able to discuss agricultural issues at the University of Guelph. And we got to tour the Skydome, the CN Tower and the Canadian Hockey Hall of Fame. We also attended the Royal Winter Fair and horse show. It was a great time and I met several new friends. Apply for this opportunity next year and you'll be glad that you did!
I love being a 4-H member, It has allowed me to become Involved in my community, and to take part in events, which I may otherwise not be involved in! I have met many people, from around the world, and have have done many interesting things, as well as LEARNING TO DO BY DOING! Thank you to all 4H'ers, leaders and volunteers!
